Ramblings of a Normal Guy: When freedom of speech goes too far..

The United States of America

It’s the land of the free, home of the brave and fatty foods that will make your head spin. We like fast cars, lots of explosions and anything we can get our greedy hands on. We will talk with strangers, and fight tooth and nail for anything we want. Sure, we don’t always make the right decisions, and we can be batshit insane too, but it’s my country and I love it. Yes I <3 America get over it. Within these great United States we have a thing called the bills of rights. The Bill of Rights is a series of limitations on the power of the United States federal government, protecting the natural rights of liberty and property including freedom of speech, a free press, free assembly, and free association, as well as the right to keep and bear arms.  The very first one (Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances) is the most important one of these bills. It allows us to speak our minds, and follow our own faith. Hell it's what this country was founded on! But when does this go too far? When does this freedom become not that, but a plague on all? Don’t get me wrong, I love a good protest.  People coming out in masses to preach, protect and call for things they truly believe in. Hell I think its America at its finest. But like all things, humans find a way to majorly fuck it up.

Enter the Westboro Baptist Church.

But who are these people?  Well our good friends at Wiki have this to say:

The Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) is an independent Baptist church known for its extreme stance against homosexuality  and its protest activities, which include picketing funerals and desecrating the American flag. The church is widely described as a hate group  and is monitored as such by the Anti-Defamation League and Southern Poverty Law Center. It is headed by Fred Phelps and consists mostly of members of his large family;  in 2007, it had 71 members.  The church is headquartered in a residential neighborhood on the west side of Topeka about three miles west of the Kansas State Capitol at 3701 West 12th Street, Topeka, Kansas, United States. Its first public service was held on the afternoon of Sunday, November 27, 1955.

How does one describe evil? How does one describe what insanity is? It’s something that can’t be properly described in just a few words over the internet. I don't think simple text is possible to describe these people.  Spoken words and the emotions of them are needed here, I will however do my best. These things have the audacity to call themselves a religious order while proclaiming numerous things that their “God” hates. Withing the same breath of saying "we follow the one true god" they say things like "god hates fags, and thank god for 9/11". They trample on the American flag while still using all of its resources. If there was one group that could be labeled as “Lord of the batshit”, these things would be it. With a congregation of 78 brainwashed members, (which is mostly his spawn btw) the leaders of this shit are two of the most annoyingly hateful and cruel individuals to ever disgrace the human race.  And considering what humanity has produced, that’s saying a lot…

Did you watch that video above? If not do so now, I'll wait here as I rant at the screen about these fuck tards.  No really, just thinking about these things sets me off on a tangent even I didn't think possible. I wonder if I can throw these things in with a barrel full of idiots and throw them off a cliff.. Eh, ignore my ranting, watch the video and come back.

Back? If your a decent human being, your probably thinking "what the fuck did I just watch, this can't be real". Sadly it is real. To make matters worse, a lot of those members of this church are children of all ages. That’s right, these things  are not only spouting off shit they should be shot for, they are also further corrupting the minds of innocence with their incessant babbling bullshit. Don’t we have enough problems with today’s youth and parents that don’t give a shit? Now we have to deal with this too! Bloody well unreal!
hat have they done to earn the scorn of so many? They picket funerals of soldiers who have died in Iraq with signs that read "Thank God For Dead Soldiers,". They picket funerals of gay people, shout cruel things to homosexuals, encourage cruelty towards people who are different by claiming that "God Hates America!" and degrade people on their websites. They praised the people who committed the vile acts of 9/11. Need I go on? Sure why not!

  • They are one of over 500 hate groups monitored by the Southern Poverty Law Center. (http://www.splcenter.org)
  • They have no affiliation any Baptist Organization in this country or anywhere else in the world.
  • The group is comprised of anywhere from 75 to 100 people, mainly all related to Fred Phelps, Sr.
  • Four of Fred Phelps Sr.'s thirteen children have gone on record that their father physically abused them nearly all their lives, stating it was "God's way".
  • Fred Phelps Sr. was convicted of battery in 1951 in California and also overdosed on drugs in 1968.
  • Many of the church members are lawyers or work in other jobs with the government or similar organizations even though they oppose the American government.
  • Fred Phelps Sr. was disbarred from practicing law in 1979 for his lack of ethics in practicing law.
  • *thanks to http://www.freewebs.com/anti-westboro/ for the quick list

These are the people who take free speech to far, who cause violence and hate, all the while preaching a faith they neither understand or follow.

Oh and they don't even follow their own frigging laws.

Recently these things where back in the news for their "victory" in the US supreme court. The case was brought up if the church's ability to stage protests at high visibility funerals, drawing media attention and gaining a platform for their views was a protected one. As much as I hate to agree with the ultimate ruling of the highest court in the land, I sadly must. All free speech must be protected to make America what it is. If we (as in the government) starts censoring one group of people, where would it stop? Would people who peacefully protect for change be silenced? How about fellow bloggers that disagree with this or that law? It would be a dangerous president that shouldn't be cross. To many people have fought and died (many of which WBC are protesting) for our rights, they should not be discarded when it is inconvenient.  Of course this also protects our right to (non-violently) give them hell right back.

They, nor their word is immortal. One day their pastor will pass on into the next life (and sent to the deepest darkest pit) they to will morn his passing. They too will experience the pain and suffering as hundreds of people come with signs "thank god for dead pastors" "thank god he's finally dead" and "god hates WBC and dead homohaters". They might even see the error of their ways.

Probably not, but its a nice thought.
